Die Velux Stiftung präsentierte im Januar die Gewinner des zweiten Tageslicht-Wettbewerbes im S AM Swiss Archiutecture Museum in Basel. Gewinner des Awards 2010 ist die Therme Vals von Peter Zumthor in Vals, Schweiz. Weitere Preise gingen an James Turrell für die Ski-Unterkunft Piz Uter in Zuoz und an Isa Stürm und Urs Wolf für das Kunz(Zeug)Haus in Rapperswil. The presentation was realized in collaboration with the Department of Architecture of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (DARDEN ETH), Zürich and the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum. Winner of the Daylight-Award 2010 is the Therme Vals of Peter Zumthor in Vals, Switzerland. Two honorary awards go to James Turrell for his Skyspace Piz Uter in Zuoz and to Isa Stürm Urs Wolf Architects for the Kunst(Zeug)Haus in Rapperswil, both in Switzerland. In der Sky Lobby der DZ BANK realisierte James Turrell 1998 seine bis dato komplexeste Lichtinstallation. Vier Elemente des Raums, das Panoramafenster, die Türen, die Wet-Bar und die Back-Bar, stehen im ständigen Neon-Lichtwechsel, wodurch der Besucher eine meditative Atmosphäre erfährt. Diese Turrell-Exkursion gehört inzwischen zu den unverzichtbaren Klassikern des Luminale-Programms. In the Sky Lobby of the DZ BANK James Turrell 1998 realised his most complex light installation to date. Four elements of the room, the panorama window, the doors, the wet bar and the back bar are in constantly changing neon light, whereby the visitor experiences a meditative atmosphere. This Turrell excursion has become one of the essential classics of the Luminale programme.

Der „Light Shaft“ des amerikanischen Künstlers James Turrell durchwandert den gläsernen Gallileo Art Tower der Commerzbank über die Gesamthöhe von 136 Metern. Farbiges Licht füllt den transparenten Aufzugsbereich von innen aus und steigt langsam von Etage zu Etage nach oben. Neonröhren und eine spezielle Software erzeugen diesen intensiven Leuchtraum, der inzwischen zu den Luminale-Klassikern gehört. In Wolfsburg hat James Turrell sein bisher raumgreifendstes Projekt realisiert. Gehen Sie mit Dr. Markus Brüderlin, dem Museumsdirektor des Kunstmuseums Wolfsburg, auf Entdeckungsreise.
The primary medium of Californian artist James Turrell is light. Probably the best-known artist in his field, Turrell’s entire oeuvre since the 1960s has been devoted to exploring the diverse manifestations of this immaterial medium and working towards a new, space-defining form of light art. While light here refers to nothing beyond itself, it causes surface, colour and space to interact and allows viewers to immerse themselves in a mysterious, painterly world. Occupying a central place in James Turrell’s oeuvre is the Roden Crater, an extinct volcano in the Arizona desert which the artist has been transforming into an observatory since 1974. Building upon the cosmic aspects of this quiet, meditative place, Turrell is creating the worldwide largest museum installation he has made to date at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, producing a light-filled space of experience in the tradition of his Ganzfeld Pieces. Making full use of the adaptable architecture system of the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg – unique within the German museum landscape – his installation will be an exploration of space and light: immaterial and material at once. The timelessness and fascination of James Turrell’s works derives from his incredible skill at capturing fleeting light and giving it the visual presence and tactile density of a physical body.

James Turrell Museum in Colomé / Argentina

Das James Turrell Museum der Hess Art Collection ist das erste Museum weltweit, das ausschließlich den Arbeiten von James Turrell gewidmet ist, der zu den international renommiertesten zeitgenössischen Licht- und Raum-Künstlern zählt. Zum ersten Mal sind hier auf 1.680 qm Ausstellungsfläche neun Licht-Installationen vereint, die aus fünf Dekaden des künstlerischen Schaffens von James Turrell stammen. Ausgestellt ist u.a. die Licht-Installation Spread 2003, in dem der Besucher von blauem Licht umgeben ist, sowie die Arbeit Unseen Blue 2002, der weltweit größte Skyspace. Letzterer umschließt einen Innenhof und erreicht seine größte Intensität zur Dämmerung. Die permanente Ausstellung wird ferner ergänzt durch zahlreiche Papierarbeiten des Künstlers, Zeichnungen und Druckgraphik. Mehr>
Being aware of the unity of nature and art, the entrepreneur and art collector Donald M. Hess felt induced to have James Turrell design a museum, The James Turrell Museum, at such a special place as Colomé. Born in Los Angeles in 1943, Turrell ranks among the most influential light and space artists of our time and has been analyzing the various manifestations of natural and artificial light in depth since the 1960’s. “I want to create an atmosphere that can be consciously plumbed with seeing like the wordless thought that comes from looking in a fire,” he states about his work. Light and space become a multidimensional experience for the viewer – a motif that Turrell continuously expresses in
