    This exhibition (San Francisco/ Tokyo) explores the common visual and intellectual principles that underlie both fashion and architecture. Both disciplines start with the human body and expand on ideas of space and movement – Architects and fashion designers produce environments defined through spatial awareness – the structures they create are based on volume, function, proportion, and material. Presenting the work of international fashion designers and architects, the exhibition examines themes such as shelter, identity, tectonic strategies, creative process, and parallel stylistic tendencies including deconstruction and minimalism.     Richard Kelly: Ausgewählte Arbeiten. Ausstellung jetzt in Europa auf Tour. Die Schau wurde zuletzt 2006 im Center for Architecture in New York City gezeigt und illustriert beispielhaft die Philosophie des berühmten amerikanischen Lichtplaners und Designers sowie seine visionäre Herangehensweise an Architekturbeleuchtung, Tageslichtnutzung und Leuchtendesign. Weitere Stationen der von der ERCO Leuchten GmbH, Lüdenscheid, gemeinsam mit der PLDA (Professional Lighting Designers Association) ausgerichteten Ausstellungstour sind Amsterdam (13.09. – 05.10.), London (25.10. – 16.11.) und Wien (29.11.-16.12.).

    Als Pionier der professionellen Architekturbeleuchtung entwickelte Richard Kelly nicht nur gemeinsam mit dem genialen Konstrukteur Edison Price innovative Leuchtentypen und Lichtwerkzeuge. Er schuf auch die philosophischen Grundlagen einer neuen wahrnehmungs-orientierten Lichtplanung. Ausgehend von seinen Studien über Theaterbeleuchtung und seinem Verständnis der „Lichtenergiewirkungen“ ermittelte er drei Spielarten des Lichts: ambient luminescence (Allgemeinbeleuchtung), focal glow (Akzentbeleuchtung) sowie play of brilliants (atmosphärische Lichteffekte). In richtungweisenden Arbeiten zeigte Kelly, wie sich die drei Lichtkategorien planvoll kombinieren und praktisch in professionelle Architekturbeleuchtung umsetzen lassen. Diese Arbeiten stehen im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung. Darunter sind viele bekannte Projekte wie das Kimbell Museum of Fine Art und das Yale Center for British Art des Architekten Louis Kahn, das Glasshouse und das New York State Theater im Lincoln Center von Philip Johnson und das von Mies van der Rohe und Philip Johnson entworfene Seagram Building.

    Now touring Europe. The exhibition “Richard Kelly: Selected Works” was last shown in 2006 at the Center for Architecture in New York City and illustrates both the philosophy of the famous American lighting designer and architect, and his visionary approach to architectural lighting, daylight usage and luminaire design. Organized by ERCO Leuchten GmbH of Lüdenscheid jointly with the PLDA (Professional Lighting Designers’ Association), the exhibition will halt in Amsterdam (13.09. – 05.10.), London (25.10. – 16.11.) and Vienna (29.11.-16.12.).

    As a pioneer of professional architectural lighting, Richard Kelly not only developed innovative luminaires and lighting tools, helped by the brilliant design engineer Edison Price, but also laid the philosophical foundations for a new perception-oriented type of lighting design. Based on his studies of theatrical lighting and his analysis of what he called “the effects of light energy”, Kelly defined three varieties of light: ambient luminescence, focal glow and play of brilliants. In his most influential works, Kelly showed how these three varieties of light could be combined to masterful effect in the context of professional architectural lighting. These works form the centrepiece of the exhibition and include many well-known projects such as the Kimbell Museum of Fine Art and the Yale Center for British Art by the architect Louis Kahn, the Glasshouse and the New York State Theater in the Lincoln Center by Philip Johnson, and Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson’s Seagram Building.

  • Munich: Osram Seven ScreensMünchen: Osram Seven Screens / Plattform Digitale Lichtkunst

    Das Lichtkunstprojekt Seven Screens vor der Hauptverwaltung der OSRAM GmbH in München bietet Künstlern eine Plattform für Medienkunst. Als Landmark konzipiert, bilden sieben Stelen mit ihren LED-Displays ein neues städtebauliches Glanzlicht in der bayerischen Landeshauptstadt. München, Mittlerer Ring. Die Straßen sind menschenleer, wirken verlassen. Plötzlich erfasst eine Flutwelle die Häuserzeilen und die Fassaden der Bauten spiegeln sich im Wasser. Zwei Menschen schweben in den Fluten und suchen in eigentümlich anmutenden, fast schwerelosen Bewegungen ihre Balance. Was wie eine surreale Zukunftsvision anmutet, gehört zur Videoinstallation „2027“ des Künstlerduos Haubitz+Zoche. Von August bis Ende Oktober im Rahmen des Lichtkunstprojekts Seven Screens zu sehen. www.osram.de

    Seven Screens is a light-art project alongside the head office of OSRAM GmbH in Munich that offers artists a platform for media art. Conceived as a landmark, the seven LED columns, each of which is almost six metres high, now number among the urban design highlights of the Bavarian capital. Munich, Mittlerer Ring. The streets are deserted, seem desolate. Then, all of a sudden, a tidal wave covers the rows of houses, the facades of the buildings reflected in the water. Two people are seen floating in the water, trying to find their balance in near-weightless movements that strike one as odd. What seems like a surreal vision of the future is actually part of the “2027“ video installation of the artistic duo of Haubitz+Zoche, displayed from late April until the end of June and then again from August to the end of October within the scope of the light-related art project, Seven Screens. www.osram.de

Die hier vorgestellten Stadtforscher – Architekten und Stadtplaner, Soziologen und Kulturwissenschaftler – beobachten und analysieren diese Prozesse aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven.

    Urban Light Studies: „Die Lighting Detectives“ sind eine gemeinnützige Gruppe, die sich der Erforschung der Lichtkultur durch Feldforschung vor Ort widmet. „Die Light Detectives“ wurden gegründet, um den gegenwärtigen Zustand der städtischen Umweltbeleuchtung zu überprüfen.

    Urban Age Award. Deutsche Bank vergibt Preis erstmals in Mumbai. Die Deutsche Bank wird ab 2007 jährlich einen Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award vergeben. Mit dem Preis sollen neue Verantwortungspartnerschaften aus Bürgern, Politikern, Wirtschaft und NGO’s ausgezeichnet werden, die ihre Städte fit für das 21. Jahrhundert machen. Im November 2007 wird der Urban Age Award das erste Mal im Rahmen der Urban Age Konferenz vergeben. Die internationale Jury besteht aus dem früheren Bürgermeister von Washington D.C. Anthony Williams, dem Architekten Enrique Norten und dem Stadtplaner Ricky Burdett. Ergänzt wird die erste Jury für die Preisverleihung in Mumbai um den Architekten Rahul Mehrotra und den Autor und Journalisten Suketu Mehta.

    Urban Age Award. Deutsche Bank Awards Inaugural Prize in Mumbai. From 2007 onwards, the Deutsche Bank will be presenting an annual Urban Age Award. The prize is designed to recognize the contribution of partnerships made up of citizens, politicians, businesses and non-governmental organizations towards making their cities fit for the 21st century. In November 2007, the inaugural Urban Age Award will be presented in the context of the Urban Age Conference in Mumbai (formerly Bombay). The international jury is composed of Anthony Williams, formerly Mayor of Washington D.C., the architect Enrique Norten and the town planner Ricky Burdett. These three jury members will joined in Mumbai by the architect Rahul Mehrotra and the author and journalist Suketu Metha.

In vielen Branchen – besonders im Dienstleistungssektor – wird heute rund um die Uhr gearbeitet. Die Globalisierung und die digitale Vernetzung beschleunigen diesen Prozess rasant. Die industrialisierten Länder vernetzen sich zu 24-Stunden-Non-Stopp-Businesszonen. Wenn in Tokyo die Börse schließt, wird der Handel in Frankfurt fortgesetzt, um dann weiter nach New York zu wandern. In den übrigen Regionen geht das Licht aus – auch in einem wörtlichen Sinn. Tag und Nacht sind zu Gestaltungsaufgaben geworden.

Höhepunkte dieser Entwicklung lassen sich im Jugendstil, in den 1930er bis 1960er Jahren und in der Gegenwart ausmachen. „Nature Design“ nimmt Bezug auf dieses Phänomen und zeigt Objekte und Projekte vor allem aus den Bereichen Design und Architektur, die die Natur nicht einfach abbilden oder nachahmen, sondern sie als Ausgangspunkt und Inspirationsreservoir nutzen, um eine innovative Antwort auf das Verhältnis von Mensch und Natur zu geben.     lmn_book.pngDen 2007 Historical Book Award von Rencontres Photographie d’Arles, des traditionsreichsten Photographie-Festival Europas, erhielten Jeannine Fiedler und Hattula Moholy-Nagy für ihren Ausstellungskatalog Lászlo Moholy-Nagy – Color in Transparency im Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin. Der Band dokumentiert die photographischen Experimente des Bauhaus-Künstlers Moholy-Nagy, der zu den Klassikern der Lichtkunst zählt. Das Buch ist im Steidl Verlag erschienen (deutsch/englisch).     The catalogue to the Bauhaus-Archive’s major exhibition in Berlin of Moholy-Nagy’s color photography, “Color in Transparency: Photographic Experiments in Color Fotografische Experimenten in Farbe 1934-1946,” was given the 2007 Historical Book Award by the Rencontres Photographie d’Arles. This catalogue, edited by Jeannine Fiedler and Hattula Moholy-Nagy, is published in English and German by the Steidl Verlag and includes 100 annotated examples of Moholy-Nagy’s color photography.More information

  • LED-Teahouse of Kengo Kuma in Frankfurt

    Kengo KumaAuf seiner Suche nach flexiblen Bauten – Kengo Kuma spricht von „breathing architecture“ – gelangt er bei diesem Projekt zu einer wahrhaft ephemeren Struktur. Dieses Teehaus erhebt sich nicht als feste Holzkonstruktion sondern entfaltet sich als luftgetragene Form. Wird ein Ventilationssystem aktiviert so erwächst das Teehaus wie eine weiße Blüte aus High Tech Textil. Im Inneren finden neun Tatami Matten, der elektrischbeheizbare Herd für den Wasserkessel, eine Tokonoma Nische und ein Vorbereitungsraum auf ca. 20 qm Platz. Eine integrierte LED-Technik ermöglicht die Nutzung auch bei Nacht, eine Beheizung über die Hülle ist möglich. Das Teehaus von Kengo Kuma befindet sich im Park des Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt am Main.

    In search of flexible buildings – Kengo Kuma uses the term “breathing architecture” – he has arrived at a truly ephemeral structure with this project. The teahouse does not rise up from the ground as a fixed wooden construction, but unfolds as an airborne form. When a ventilation system is activated, the teahouse swells into shape like a white high-tech textileblossom. In its interior, comprising a surface of approximately twenty square metres, are nine tatami mats, an electric stove for the water kettle, a tokonoma niche and a preparation room. Integrated LED technology allows the use of the teahouse at night; the interior can be heated by way of the membrane. The Teehouse of Kengo Kuma is situated in the garden of Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt am Main.
