Das James Turrell Museum der Hess Art Collection ist das erste Museum weltweit, das ausschließlich den Arbeiten von James Turrell gewidmet ist, der zu den international renommiertesten zeitgenössischen Licht- und Raum-Künstlern zählt. Zum ersten Mal sind hier auf 1.680 qm Ausstellungsfläche neun Licht-Installationen vereint, die aus fünf Dekaden des künstlerischen Schaffens von James Turrell stammen. Ausgestellt ist u.a. die Licht-Installation Spread 2003, in dem der Besucher von blauem Licht umgeben ist, sowie die Arbeit Unseen Blue 2002, der weltweit größte Skyspace. Letzterer umschließt einen Innenhof und erreicht seine größte Intensität zur Dämmerung. Being aware of the unity of nature and art, the entrepreneur and art collector Donald M. Hess felt induced to have James Turrell design a museum, The James Turrell Museum, at such a special place as Colomé. Born in Los Angeles in 1943, Turrell ranks among the most influential light and space artists of our time and has been analyzing the various manifestations of natural and artificial light in depth since the 1960’s. “I want to create an atmosphere that can be consciously plumbed with seeing like the wordless thought that comes from looking in a fire,” he states about his work.
