Das Licht ist Motiv und Thema des Impressionismus – das Malen en plein air ist eines der Kennzeichen dieses Kunststils. Seurat hat sich in intensiver Weise mit dem Phänomen Licht und Farbe beschäftigt in seiner Freiluftmalerei, aber auch in seiner Ateliermalerei. Der französische Neoimpressionist Georges Seurat gilt heute als eine der Ikonen der bildenden Kunst des 19. Jahrhunderts und als wichtigster Vertreter des von ihm entwickelten Pointillismus. Er komponierte seine Werke akribisch aus zahllosen kleinen, nebeneinander angeordneten Farbtupfern, die, sobald sie sich auf der Netzhaut des Betrachters vermischen, einzigartige Farbwelten entstehen lassen. Kein Bildthema vermag so viel über Seurats Kunst zu erzählen wie die Figur in der Landschaft. Seurat studied light and colour as a phenomenon in an intensive manner both in his outdoor art and in his atelier. The French neo-impressionist Georges Seurat is one of the icons of art in the 19th century and one of the most important protagonists of pointillism, which he developed. He composed his works out of countless small dots next to each other which conjure up unique worlds of colour when they merge in the eye of the viewer. No picture tells us as much about Seurats art as the Figure in a Landscape. Contrasts of light and dark caress and accent the figures and lend them an unreal presence.
