    Leni Schwendinger ist Lichtdesignerin in New York. Ihr Büro Light Projects Ltd. gestaltet Licht-Situationen für Gebäudekomplexe und öffentliche Plätze rund um den Globus. Ziel ist es dabei,  jeweils auf dem neuesten Stand der Technik, die Beziehung zu intensivieren und zu fördern, die Menschen zu Gebäuden, Gegenden und öffentlichen Einrichtungen entwickeln. Seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt arbeitet Leni Schwendinger projektbezogen mit einem multidisziplinären Team zusammen, in dem Architekten, Ingenieure, Graphik-Designer an der möglichst perfekten Umsetzung ihrer Ideen mitwirken.

    Luminapolis:     Leni, what was the first contact with lighting design in your biography?

    Leni Schwendinger:     I started professional lighting design for theatre, television and film in San Francisco in the late 1970’s and then moving to New York City, began architectural lighting design in the mid 1980’s.

    Luminapolis:     What is your most important project you have realized until today?

    Leni Schwendinger:     Dreaming in Color is a seminal installation because of the artistic and technical accomplishment. This project, at the McCaw Hall (Seattle, USA), immerses viewers in “melodies for the eyes”. Triple Bridge Gateway, at the Bus Terminal in Manhattan is also a project of challenges and visual firsts: I-beam bridges are transformed into sculpture with paint color and white light.

    Luminapolis:     What do you think is the mission of your profession in the next ten years?

    Leni Schwendiger:     Those of us in the public lighting discipline strive to make cities more livable and friendly after dark.

    Luminapolis:     What is your next project you are working on?

    Leni Schwendinger:     Light Projects is working on a city district in Doha, a sculpture in San Diego and a park in Shanghai, among others.

Her company Light Projects Ltd. creates lighting environments for architectural and public spaces all over the world. These works energize architecture, landscape and infrastructure with the ultimate objective of connecting people to each other and to their surroundings. For over a decade, the Light Projects studio has been a magnet for professional multi-disciplinary collaborations – with project-specific design teams staffed by architects, engineers, and graphic designers committed to Leni Schwendinger’s vision.

    Spätestens seit der Pariser Weltausstellung 1900 ist elektrisches Licht ein Sinnbild für Modernität. Dies blieb nicht ohne Auswirkungen auf Architektur, Theater, Malerei, Plastik, Fotografie, Film und Musik. Das Bauhaus um den Formmeister László Moholy-Nagy bildete ab 1922 ein Zentrum der neuen Bewegung. Er experimentierte mit Fotogrammen, konstruierte den Licht-Raum-Modulator, ersann ein Polykino und ein Städtelichtspiel. Die Kunsthalle Erfurt zeigt im Rahmen von ‚Bauhaus 2009‘ die Ausstellung ‚Kunstlichtspiele – Lichtästhetik der Klassischen Avantgarde‘. Mehr>

    Electrical light has been a symbol of modernity at the latest since the Paris World Exposition in 1900 and its impact has been felt in architecture, theatre, painting, sculpture, photography, film and music. The Bauhaus around the master of form László Moholy-Nagy formed a centre for the new movement from 1922. He experimented with photograms, constructed the light-space modulator, and devised a poly cinema and an urban light show. The Kunsthalle Erfurt now presents the exhibition ‚Artificial Light Play – The Aesthetics of Light in the Classic Avant-Garde‘. More>

  • iGuzzini illuminazione in Beijing


    The National Grand Theatre, located in the centre of Beijing, approximately 500 metres away from Tiananmen Square, is a real island of culture in the centre of a lake. iGuzzini illuminazione worked with Paul Andreu and the lighting designer Kaoru Mende to create artificial lighting in the public spaces and the foyer. The relationship between the building and the landscape by day and by night was a fundamental consideration in the design process.
