Was ist romantisch?

Die Wiedergewinnung des Urbanen ist unter jungen Architekten ein heißes Thema, das Leidenschaften weckt. Einerseits demographisch bedingte Schrumpfungs-Prozesse der Städte, andererseits Explosionen der Megalopolen. Hier ausufernde Städte entlang der Autobahnen, dort Eventcities, die Pendler und Touristen animieren. Vieles ist in Bewegung gekommen. Getrieben durch neue Technologien, die Kräfte der Globalisierung und die Sorge um den Planeten Erde. Bionik, Nachhaltigkeit, interaktive Medienfassaden, Street Art, Umnutzungen und Zwischennutzungen, parasitäre Architektur sind die Stichworte für unübersichtliche Umbruchzeiten. Und immer wieder spielt das Licht, dieses einzigartige Medium des Transformativen, seine dynamisierende Rolle.

Für temporäre wie performative Gestaltungsstrategien ist Licht ein nahe liegendes, effektvolles, gut verfügbares und auch kostengünstiges Medium. Diese Tendenzen in Architektur, Design und Kunst greift die Luminale auf und übersetzt sie in ein Festivalprogramm.

Aus Licht geborene Atmosphären verzaubern vermeintlich bekannte Areale, reizen die Netzhaut und stimulieren alle Sinne. In vielerlei Hinsicht ist die Luminale ein spätes Kind der Romantik, deren programmatische Haltung der Nacht-Dichter Novalis formuliert. Mit gutem Licht eine durchrationalisierte Welt wieder ein Stück weit zu verzaubern, dieses Ziel verweist auf die heimlichen Sehnsüchte, die die Luminale so beliebt sein lassen.

Die Bedeutung des Lichtes nimmt mit der Verstädterung der Welt weiter zu. 2006 lebten weltweit erstmals mehr Menschen in Städten als auf dem Lande. Licht und Elektrizität sind wesentliche Medien des Urbanen. In dieser Hinsicht ist die Luminale ein Festival des aufziehenden Stadt-Zeitalters, des Urban Age, und reflektiert die Entwicklung des Urbanen, dieses Licht durchfluteten Welt-Innenraumes, der sich allmählich zu bilden beginnt.

Das Konzept der Luminale greift viele Traditionslinen auf, die sich bis in die Romantik zurückverfolgen lassen.

Reinforcing the urban landscape is a hot topic among young architects, and one that inflames passions. We are seeing, on the one hand, the demographically-determined shrinking of the towns, and on the other, ballooning growth in the megapolises. Here: overflowing conurbations strung together by motorways. There: ‚event cities‘ into which tourists or commuters breathe any life. So much that was static is now in flux, with new technologies, the forces of globalisation, and mounting concern for the health of Mother Earth defining whole new agendas in which „bionics“, „sustainability“, „interactive media facades“, „street art“, „conversion“, „temporary conversion“ and „parasitic architecture“ are the new buzzwords – a coinage freshly minted for an age of dizzying change, in which time and again we see light, that uniquely transformational medium, playing its galvanizing role.

For temporary as well as performative design strategies, light is an obvious, effective, easily available, and also an economical, medium. The Luminale gathers in all these strands in architecture, design and art and weaves them into a festival programme.

Ambiences born of light lend enchantment to places once taken granted, excite the retina, and stimulate all five senses. In many respects, the Luminale is a late child of the romantic, the programmatic attitude of which Novalis, the poet of the night, formulated. To transform the uniformly rational world through the salutary infusion of light is an objective that points up the latent yearnings into which the Luminale has so successfully tapped.

Lighting is becoming increasingly important due to the citification of the world. In 2006, for the first time, more people in the world were living in cities than in the countryside. Light and electricity are the fundamental mediums of urban life. In this respect, the Luminale is a festival of the dawning era of the city, of the Urban Age – a festival that documents the explosion of the urbane, the genesis of a world of our own making, creation a world inner space permeated with light, that is now gradually taking shape.

The concept of the Luminale draws upon many lines of tradition that can be traced right back to the Romantic Age.
