Das Zentrum für Internationale Lichtkunst zeigt ein neues Kunstwerk des amerikanischen Lichtkünstlers James Turrell. James Turrell konzipierte zwei Wahrnehmungsräume mit dem Titel „Third Breath, 2005“. Diese ermöglichen den Besuchern eine neue Seherfahrung. Installationen von James Turrell waren während verschiedener Luminalen in Frankfurt zu sehen: Skylobby und Light Shaft im Gallileo-Hochhaus. In Unna wird auf einen würfelförmigen Raum (Camera Obscura Space) ein nach oben geöffneter Zylinder aufgesetzt (Skyspace). Beide Räume sind miteinander verbunden. Der obere Skyspace fängt Himmelsbilder ein, die durch eine Linse an der Decke der Camera Obscura aufgefangen und auf den Boden reflektiert werden. Die Linse produzierte Swarovski Optik (Absam). Die Installation ist durch einen unterirdischen Gang mit dem Museum verbunden. Der Besucher betritt den unteren, dunklen Teil der Installation, die Camera Obscura. Auf dem dunklen Boden kann er Reflektionen des Himmels, Wolken oder den Mond erkennen. Über Treppen kann der Besucher dann den oberen Teil der Installation, den Skyspace, erreichen.
Während in der Camera Obscura ein durch das natürliche Licht und die Brennschärfe der Linse erzeugtes Bild des Himmels zu sehen ist, kann der Besucher hier den Vergleich zum natürlichen Himmelsbild herstellen, das wie eine riesige Kuppel über ihm zu schweben scheint. Turrell lässt uns durch die Reduktion auf einen Ausschnitt Licht und Schatten als etwas Materielles erfahren. Der Himmel wird zu einem Bild, das sich in ständiger Wandlung befindet.
Die Eröffnung des neuen Kunstwerks wird von einer thematischen Ausstellung zu Turrells Werk begleitet: „James Turrell – Geometrie des Lichts“. Hier wird der Besucher die Entwicklung von Turrells Wahrnehmungsräumen bis hin zum Lebenswerk des Künstlers, dem Roden Crater in Arizona, an verschiedenen Exponaten nachvollziehen können. Die Ausstellung wird bis zum 31. Mai 2009 gezeigt.
The Centre for International Light Art Unna is presenting a new art work of the American light artist James Turrell. James Turrell designed two perceptional spaces, namely a Skyspace and a Camera Obscura Space. These offer a new visual experience to the visitors. In Unna a cylinder which is open to the sky is placed on a cubic structure (Camera Obscura Space). Both spaces are linked. The upper Skyspace collects images of the sky which are bundled by a lense reflecting the light onto the ground of the Camera Obscura. The lens came from Swarovski Optik (Absam). More pictures here>
The installation is connected to the museum by an underground corridor. The visitors enter the lower, darker part of the installation, the Camera Obscura. They can perceive the reflections of the sky, the clouds or the moon on the dark ground. Thereafter, the visitor can reach the upper part of the installation, the Skyspace.
While in the Camera Obscura an image of the sky created by natural light and the focal sharpness of the lense is to be seen, in the Skyspace the visitor is able to compare the projection with the image of the natural sky. This image seems to be floating above the observer like a huge cupola. Turrell makes the visitor view the sky through a small arperture, which accounts for experiencing light and shadow as something material. The sky itself becomes a picture in continuous transformation.
The opening of the new work of art will be accompanied by a topical exhibition about Turrell’s œuvre: “James Turrell – Geometry of Light”. By presenting different exhibits, the visitor will be able to follow Turrell´s artistical development of perceptional spaces up to the most important work of his life, the Roden Crater in Arizona. The exhibition will be presented until 31st May, 2009.
