Als Licht-Spektakel zur Messe Light + Building startete die Luminale. In­zwischen ist sie zur Biennale der Lichtkultur herangereift. Das Ver­an­staltungskonzept leuchtet auch an­dernorts ein. Selbst London be­ruft sich auf das strahlende Vorbild aus Frankfurt.

Alle zwei Jahre präsentieren Archi­tekten, Designer und Künstler ihre Licht-Gestaltungen gemeinsam mit Hochschulen, Kulturinstituten, der Industrie und den kommunalen Fach­­verwaltungen. Die Renais­sance des Urbanen steht auf dem Pro­gramm und fasziniert die breite Öffentlichkeit wie das Fachpubli­kum. In diesem Spagat liegt die besondere Qualität der Luminale.

Licht gilt als Baumaterial des 21. Jahr­­hunderts. Licht überträgt Botschaf­ten, Licht verbindet. Die Geschwin­digkeit des Lichtes, seine flüchtigen Eigen­schaften sind sinnbildlich für den Wandel zur Medien-, Dienst­leistungs- und Wissens­gesell­schaft. Frankfurt am Main und die Region sind im globalen Wettbe­werb bevorzugte Bauplätze für diese Zukunft. Deshalb passt die Luminale so gut zu uns.

Wir sind stolz auf die Beständig­keit, Frankfurt am Main als Stadt des Austauschs von Wissen und Waren immer wieder neu zu erfinden. Wir haben eine gute Tradition als Labo­ra­torium des Neuen. Die Lumi­nale macht das für alle erlebbar.
Luminale began as a lighting festi­val parallel to the Light+Building trade fair. It has since develop­ed to become a Lighting Culture Biennale. Our event concept has also caught on elsewhere. Even London refers to the shining example set by Frankfurt.
Every two years architects, de­sign­ers and artists present their light in­stallations in conjunction with colleges, cultural institutions, industry and local councils. Urban renaissance is on the agenda and fascinates both the general public and trade visitors alike. The exceptional quality of Lu­mi­nale lies with­in this balancing act.
Light is regarded as the building material of the 21st century. Light transmits messages, light connects. The speed of light, and light’s fleet­ing characteristics are symbolic for the transformation of society into a media, service and knowledge economy. Frankfurt am Main and the surrounding regions are preferred sites within global competition for this future vision. This is why Lumi­nale suits us so well.
We are proud of the constancy with which the city of Frankfurt reinvents itself time and again as a market place for knowledge and wares. We have a long tradition as a laboratory for new ideas. Luminale makes this tangible for everyone.
